Teaching the Adult Learner: Andragogy and Adult Development (VIRTUAL)

Presented by: Todd Stregiel, RAEN Certified Trainer

What makes teaching adults fundamentally different from teaching children? Adult learners are often highly self-directed, practical, and purposeful, yet they can also be resistant to change due to their deep-rooted experiences. In this interactive online workshop, we explore Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy which emphasizes how adult learners have different motivations and needs than most K-12 students. The complexity of adult learners only increases when considering the differences between younger to more mature learners. Combining demonstration and self-reflection activities, we will explore how a deeper understanding of adult learning and development frameworks can reshape the approach to instruction, making it more impactful and respectful of the adult learner’s journey. Whether you are newly navigating the adult education classroom or looking to refine years of practice, this virtual training offers a space to synchronize your teaching style with the developmental demands of your students.

This 2 hour training counts toward the 14 hours of professional development requirement for all NYSED funded program staff.
